What goes where: recycling, compost and cans

Anyone

What the recycling will and won't take, what can go in the compost pit, and why cans go in their own bag.

Everything you recycle must be clean, dry and free of food. If you're not sure, ask a volunteer at the PEEPS, or take it home.

Recycling takes
Recycling doesn't take
Hard plastic: tubs, bottles, food trays
Food waste
Soft plastic: clear wrappers, plastic bags
Anything dirty, wet or greasy
Cardboard and paper, dry and in a separate bag
Tissues, or anything with bodily fluids on it
Steel cans and food tins
Glass
Aluminium cans (in their own bag, see below)
Wood
Empty aerosols
Tetra Paks
Gas canisters
Crisp and sweet wrappers with a foil layer
Foil
Polystyrene and packing peanuts
Batteries and chemicals
Medical waste

Aluminium cans

Drinks cans go in the separate can bags or bins. A metal recycler buys them back, which helps pay for waste at Nest.

Only aluminium, please. The recycler rejects a bag if there's steel in it, so food tins and other metals go in the general recycling. Not sure? There's a magnet at the PEEPS: aluminium won't stick to it.

Compost

Food scraps can go in the compost pit at the PEEPS. Keep these out of it:

  • Large amounts of citrus
  • Fruit stickers
  • Cutlery
  • Any plastic, including plastic labelled compostable
  • Human or animal waste
  • Bleached or dyed tissue and paper (plain, unbleached paper is fine)
