Give, Take & Trade: the rules
Version 1. Short, because the idea is simple.
What this is
A place for burners to pass on their own kit. Give it away, sell it second-hand, lend it from your library, or ask to borrow something for a burn. fyb is the noticeboard and the introduction. The handover, the money and the return date are between the two of you.
Nothing goes through fyb. No payments, no deposits, no escrow. We never see what was paid and we don't want to. That's what keeps this a community thing rather than a shop.
Strictly non-commercial
- Your own second-hand stuff only. No traders, no stock, no dropshipping, no selling for a business.
- Every Sell listing carries a declaration to that effect, and there are limits on how many things you can list and sell in a year. If you need more, ask on your Give, Take & Trade page.
- Buyers: these are private sales between two people. No consumer rights, no returns, no guarantees. Look before you pay.
- Selling your own possessions isn't taxable trading in the UK. If you're doing something else, this isn't the place for it.
Not allowed, ever
- Fireworks, pyrotechnics and flame effects fuel
- Fuel and gas canisters
- Weapons, knives sold as weapons, air guns, crossbows
- Drugs and intoxicants of any kind, including alcohol, tobacco, vapes and nitrous
- Medicines and controlled substances
- Animals
- Counterfeit or replica branded goods
- Anything you need a licence to own or sell
- Stolen goods
Drugs and intoxicants of any kind means what it says, alcohol included. This is a kit exchange, not a bar.
Lending and borrowing
A loan is on trust between the two of you. fyb doesn't insure anything, isn't a party to the loan, and can't make anyone give something back. Agree the return date and the condition in writing, here, before it changes hands. When you borrow, you tick the owner's commitments, which come from this fixed menu:
- I'll return it in the condition I received it, allowing for fair wear.
- If I break it, I'll repair or replace it.
- I'll return it by the date we agree.
- If it's lost while it's with me, I'll cover the cost we agree.
An owner may ask for a cash deposit in person. Never pay a deposit online to reserve something.
Staying safe
- No links, email addresses, phone numbers or postcodes in a listing. Share what you need to in the conversation, which stays private between you.
- Meet somewhere public for anything valuable. Bring a friend if you like.
- Pay on handover once you've seen it. If you must pay before you meet, use PayPal “goods and services”, not “friends and family”.
- Anyone can be reported from their listing or their profile. We hide first and ask questions after; we don't delete. Repeat offenders are suspended.
- Give, Take & Trade is for adults. It opens on your 18th birthday.
Your data
Your home base is town-level only; never put a street or postcode in it. Public listings are public, including to people who aren't signed in, unless you set one to signed-in burners only. Listings, conversations and loans are deleted a year after they finish. Everything else is in the privacy notice.
